THE WETLAND OF AGRAS-VRYTA-NISI

National Agricultural Research Foundation - Greece

 Profile

The National Agricultural Research Foundation is a Public institute with a long history of successful development of Agricultural Research in Greece. The F.R.I (Forest Research Institute) is a N.AG.RE.F branch founded in 1962 and responsible today for development of technology and the dissemination of know–how for the sustainable management of forest and rangelands and the protection of the natural environment. It is widely recognised as a very significant research centre for the land use and sustainable management. Its operational unit, which participates in this project, has experience and excellent knowledge of the local conditions

because of the implementation of research programs and studies in the wetland area. The F.R.I. considers that it’s time for the implementation of measures and the dissemination of research results. During the period 1998-2001, NAGREF implemented at the Agras site, part of a larger LIFE NATURE project, which carried out site ornithological and habitat assessments, the site Management Plan, a series of public meetings for wetland conservation, as well as public awareness activities, with most significant the establishment of a small Wetland Information Center. A wetland monitoring plan was also developed (protocols and GIS database) and implemented on a pilot basis. The participation of the Institute in the present project proposal, which is a continuation of the previous project effort, is expected to have a considerable positive contribution in the successful implementation of the proposed project.
